Wis. adult recovering after bite from rabid bat; child also exposed

An adult and child were exposed to a rabid bat in their Milwaukee home this week while they slept. Both are undergoing post-exposure rabies prophylaxis. Rabies is considered invariably fatal, but a Fond du Lac, Wis., teen was the first person known to survive rabies infection without receiving the vaccine. Her medical team developed a novel protocol to treat her that involved a medically induced coma to protect her brain.
