Doctor questions trend toward quick hospice designation

Hospital physicians are aggressively designating new patients for hospice care if they are at risk of dying soon to avoid 30-day mortality penalties under the Affordable Care Act, Dr. Joel Kupfer of Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, Ill., wrote in Viewpoint article in the Journal of the American Medical Association. He says he is concerned that decisions could be rushed, leaving families and patients without enough time to consider emotional and important issues.
