British urgently investigate possible new cattle disease

British veterinarians conducted tests on a heifer but could not identify the suspected viral agent responsible for the deadly damage to the cow's brain, raising the specter of another strain of BSE. The threat from animal-borne diseases that could cross over to humans is taken more seriously since 146 people died or fell incurably ill from the human form of BSE.
