Study: Multiple myeloma drug may also combat lupus

German researchers reported Sunday that Velcade, Millennium Pharmaceuticals' drug for multiple myeloma, may also combat systemic lupus erythematosus. In studies on mice with strains of a disease similar to lupus, the scientists found that the drug can suppress the production of autoantibodies and extend the animals' survival. "Careful clinical studies should be initiated," the researchers said.
