As automakers struggle, chemical industry prepares for the fallout

With the average light vehicle made in North America representing $2,664 in chemistry, the upheaval in the U.S. auto industry could take a big toll, according to the American Chemistry Council. The recession couldn't have come at a worse time for the already-struggling industry, said ACC chief economist T. Kevin Swift. "The extent of the downturn surprised many people and just made things worse," he said.
