Laddered annuities can offer security

Laddered annuities are back in vogue after the stock market left investors with big losses and questions about the soundness of conventional notions about markets. A study by Olivia Mitchell, a professor of insurance and risk management at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, makes an argument for using the investing strategy. "What we've found in this and earlier studies is that people facing retirement want guaranteed income, and they also want liquidity, so purchasing annuities over a period of time, even into retirement, makes sense," Mitchell said.
