Cost, timing and technology: The challenges posed by PTC

The 2015 deadline for U.S. railways to meet the Positive Train Control standards may be too aggressive, notes Railway Age editor William Vantuono. America's freight and passenger trains face three similar challenges: cost, timing and technology. Some operators are asking that PTC rollout be phased in, starting with railways that already employ cab signal or automatic train controls.
