Report calls for major FDA food-safety changes

A report issued by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council says the Food and Drug Administration is not equipped to handle food-safety problems and needs to make substantive changes. "The time has come to modernize the FDA's food-safety program focusing on the development of an integrated, risk-based system," said the chairman of the committee that prepared the Congress-requested report.
