Shuttered auto plant may find new life producing rail components

If a California congressman has his way, a shuttered auto plant near Oakland may be refitted and reopened to churn out rail vehicles and engines. Rep. John Garamendi, D-Walnut Grove, said he recently spoke with U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood about the possibility of converting the former NUMMI plant in Fremont.
