Stock market volatility sends U.S. mortgage rates to historic lows

Americans looking to buy a home or refinance a mortgage could be big winners from the plummeting stock market, as investors unload equity and rush into the perceived safety of U.S. government bonds, driving down yields in the process. The interest rate on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, following the government-bond rate, was hovering last week near its all-time low.
