Wegmans facing big-box hurdles in Maryland county

A push by Wegmans into the Washington, D.C., region has met with enthusiasm among shoppers who drive from neighboring Maryland to shop at the new store in Sterling, Va., but the chain's fans may not get their own Wegmans in Montgomery County. The county is considering strict zoning rules requiring stores as big as the 120,000-square-foot Sterling Wegmans to apply for zoning exemptions; County Executive Doug Duncan says the large stores "violate principles of smart growth." Wal-Mart critics back the measure, but at least one council member said the county should not enact legislation targeting specific chains.
