Leading isn't about vision or pathfinding or any other ambiguous skill set, it's about being able to intentionally influence behavior in a desirable way, Joseph Grenny writes. Ebbing influence is the greatest threat to a leader, he notes, as rising fiefdoms and growing walls of silence lead to a decline in compliance and performance. Effective leaders are willing to tackle organizational bad habits, he writes. They have a clear plan for how to influence others, and they're willing to accept that there are no easy solutions.
