Why America needs to triple its energy R&D budget

A group of A-list business executives is calling for the U.S. to triple its spending on energy research or risk its international competitiveness. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt and venture capitalist John Doerr are among those calling for "a Sputnik moment" to bring American energy technologies into the 21st century. The group is focusing on advances in current energy sources, including nuclear power, Gates said.
