Contractors and unions debate labor costs and work rules in NYC

Contractors in New York City want to alter labor costs and work rules for unionized construction as contracts with nearly two dozen unions approach their end on June 30. Builders want reduce costs to a 10% premium for unionized labor compared with nonunion labor and abolish work rules they say do not contribute to site productivity. Meanwhile, unions say the rules help protect workers.
