Report calls for Maori training for New Zealand's teachers

Secondary-school teachers in New Zealand should be required to take Maori language and education courses to better communicate with Maori students, a recent report states. Secondary Principals' Association President Patrick Walsh -- who opposes such a requirement because he says teachers already are taking steps to address the achievement of Maori students -- believes another mandate would only burden teachers.
