Calif. district moves to centralized meal preparation

A California school district will transition 31 elementary schools to a satellite meal program, in which breakfasts and lunches are prepared the day before at the district's Nutrition Center and then delivered, stored and heated at individual schools. Thirty-seven of the district's elementary schools already participate in the program, which officials say they expect to cut costs. Some school nutrition professionals, however, oppose the move and have gathered about 100 signatures for a petition aimed at blocking the move.
