Mich. county suspends $300M jail project for 2 months over overruns

Construction of a 2,000-bed jail in Michigan's Wayne County has been suspended for 60 days because of questions about cost overruns. Project costs have risen to $391 million, $91 million more than the value of a bond issue to finance the job, according to AECOM and Ghafari Associates, the project's construction managers. "We want to review the cost projections, timing and assess and determine what can be done to get project costs down to original estimates," said June West, spokeswoman for County Executive Robert Ficano. Work is still expected to be completed in the fall of 2014.
