SoftBank has discussed a potential takeover of T-Mobile US if its bid for Sprint Nextel falls apart, according to media reports in advance of Wednesday's scheduled vote by Sprint shareholders. SoftBank got a boost Friday when the Justice Department said the Federal Communications Commission could proceed with its review of the Sprint deal, five months after the DOJ asked the FCC to hold off. Also, Sprint has named retired Adm. Mike Mullen as a provisional independent director who will join the board if the SoftBank deal proceeds. The appointment is part of an agreement with the U.S. government to address security concerns related to the potential purchase by the Japanese carrier.
