Amazon used to oppose requiring online retailers to collect sales tax, but the e-commerce giant has reversed course, supporting the Marketplace Fairness Act. Industry watchers say the shift, which comes as Amazon widens its network of fulfillment centers, helps the retailer keep a competitive edge over smaller online merchants, which also would have to collect sales tax.
