EIA: U.S. oil, gas output growth drives highest energy security level since 1987

The surge in oil and natural gas production, fueled by the U.S. shale boom, has led to the highest ratio of energy production to consumption since 1987, according to an Energy Information Administration report. It found that energy production satisfied about 84% of energy demand or 81.7 quadrillion British thermal units in 2013, noting that energy consumption reached 97.5 quadrillion British thermal units.
