Researchers from the University of Texas Health Science Center now know how the body converts fat for storage, according to this article. The mTORC1 molecular pathway controls the shift of white fat into beige fat, and the process is regulated by the Grb10 protein. The adipose tissue regulates metabolism, as excess white fat is associated with obesity. "Understanding how beigeing is controlled is so very important because if we can improve energy expenditure, we can reduce obesity," said Feng Liu, who led the research.
