Mich. state budget would increase higher-ed spending nearly 6%

A new state budget under consideration by Michigan lawmakers would increase spending at the state's public colleges and universities by an average of 5.9%. The largest single-year spending increase for higher education in more than a decade requires schools to limit tuition increases to 3.2% or less to receive the funds. "We think it's time for a strategic reinvestment in higher education, and I think the governor and his office heard that message," said state Rep. Al Pscholka, R-Stevensville. He is chairman of the House higher-education budget subcommittee.
