Wis. district works to offer universal, free meals

The Milwaukee, Wis., school district, where 82% of students qualify for free and reduced-price meals, plans to apply for the community eligibility provision under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act to serve free meals to all students. Supporters said the move could help remove the stigma of eating free meals at school. "You don't have to worry about students who don't have money in their accounts. You eliminate overt identification because the meals are good for every student," said Jim Degan, president of the state's School Nutrition Association.
