The effort of balancing academic, college and career advising along with keeping an eye on students' mental health taxes many counselors with high counselor-to-student ratios. But in California, budget restrictions will make reducing that ratio difficult. "We'd love to add more counselors," said the school board president in Palo Alto, Calif., where two high-school students recently committed suicide. "But given the budget, we're just hoping to retain what we have."
