FDA panel considers antipsychotic drugs for children

An FDA panel is considering whether three major antipsychotic drugs should be advertised as approved for use in children and teens with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Eli Lilly and Co.'s Zyprexa, AstraZeneca's Seroquel and Pfizer's Geodon are approved for adults and used in children, but the companies need the FDA's approval to advertise them for use in younger patients. FDA reviewers concede the medications work but want to consider side effects, such as weight gain and sleepiness, before deciding.
