Airlines employed 4.1% fewer workers in 2009

Total employment at U.S. airlines dropped by 4.1% in 2009 as the recession prompted airlines to scale back and outsource some aircraft maintenance work, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The number of maintenance workers declined 7.2% compared with 2008, and the number of pilots declined by 6.4%.
