Surgical centers defend safety records:

The Ambulatory Surgery Center Advocacy Committee defended the industry's patient safety record in response to a study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The inspections were conducted before Medicare infection-control requirements were issued, and the study did not compare infection-control data with other types of health care facilities. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said ASCs will be subject to the HHS Action Plan to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infection.
