Myth about child-eating eagle may have a basis in fact, scientists say

Researchers say that a Maori myth describing a huge bird that swoops down to carry off humans is likely based in fact. Studies show that a colossal bird called the Haast eagle, which has been extinct for about 500 years, was likely capable of striking child-sized prey and carrying it off to a mountain lair for consumption.
