Bosses should demand brutal honesty of their employees, particularly if they feel things are going wrong, says Paulett Eberhart, president and chief executive of CDI. That means encouraging workers to "be very aggressive" in making their case and ensuring [they've] gotten your attention, Eberhart explains. "I don't care if you have to pound your fists on the table. ... We, at a minimum, need to discuss it or whatever the situation is," she says.
