Survey shows rise of variety stores in U.K.

A study of 2,650 U.K. shoppers found that 38% prefer variety stores to supermarkets for household items, with Home Bargains and Wilkinson the most popular. "These stores are obviously not a 'main shop' for groceries, unlike what we're seeing at food-led discounters like ALDI and Lidl, but they are attracting shoppers for specific products, especially nonfood," said Katie Littler, insight director at Him!, which conducted the survey.
