Calif. students explore the world with pen pal program

Students at Westlake Elementary School in Santa Cruz, Calif., are learning about life in other countries by exchanging letters with peers. With the aid of School-to-School International, fourth- and fifth-graders learned about the communal way of life and challenges of access to water from their West African friends, while third-graders shared with peers in Ukraine. "To have that kind of paradigm shift, when a child learns about living life in a different way than what they were raised, is really powerful," program associate Claire Wasserman said.
