Small number of District families apply for vouchers

Critics say the dearth of Washington, D.C., voucher applicants -- only about 1,200 public school students applied for the 1,600 scholarships available -- shows that there's not much public support for the federally-funded program. Officials with the Scholarship Fund counter that applications would have been greater had they had more time to publicize the program.
