Engine washing helps carriers cut fuel bills

Some airlines are turning to Pratt & Whitney's engine-washing system to cut down on fuel costs. Removing grime from the inside of a jetliner's engine can reduce fuel consumption by about 1.2%, Pratt said. It also noted that if every airline washed its engines, the industry could save about $1 billion in fuel costs and reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by 3.2 billion points.
