Engineers, architects oppose Bloomberg plan for buildings commissioner

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is facing a firestorm of protest over his proposal to open the position of city buildings commissioner to a manager without professional engineering or architectural qualifications. Bloomberg has long championed strong management experience over technical expertise in areas such as public schools, but professional societies insist the buildings commissioner must be someone who understands complex structural, technological and safety issues. The New York State Society of Professional Engineers has threatened to sue if Bloomberg's measure is approved.
