NAB: Music industry's claims are "act of desperation"

Broadcasters are calling an "act of desperation" the music industry's complaints to the Federal Communications Commission that radio stations allegedly are declining to run ads to promote a performance fee and are pulling from playlists artists who back the fee. NAB spokesman Dennis Wharton, noting that performance fee supporter Will.i.am and his group, Black Eyed Peas, have the top single on the Billboard's Pop 100 Airplay Chart, said: "If there's an FCC probe involving the music business, it ought to focus on claims from numerous artists -- from the Beatles to Prince to Cher -- that they were cheated out of royalties by their record labels." The FCC has not indicated whether it will take up the music industry's claim.
