Researchers warn of pregnancy risks related to methadone

Pregnant women who are exposed to cocaine or heroin while taking methadone to treat addiction had weakened placentas, putting their fetuses at a higher risk of serious infection, researchers found. The study, which involved placentas from uncomplicated pregnancies after cesarean section, showed that the illegal drugs allowed other toxic substances or bacteria through the organ's protective barrier.
