Selling food with a story

Fair-trade-food importer Alter Eco Americas increased its income more than fourfold during the past three years, raking in $1.5 million in 2008. "More consumers are interested in the stories behind their food," co-founder Edouard Rollet says. The company's fair-trade guidelines keep margins very thin, however, and the company says it needs $5 million in sales to operate comfortably.
