401(k) savers tap investment professionals' expertise

More than 70% of workers who opened 401(k) savings plans last year put money exclusively into professionally managed funds, according to a Vanguard Group report. More than a third of all 401(k) holders had their funds managed by professionals, a proportion that has doubled in the past five years. The report also found that the average plan account balance rose 10% in 2012, to $86,212.
