Energy Department project pursues jet fuel from biomass

Biomass as a major source of jet fuel is the objective of a joint project under the Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Cobalt Technologies, the U.S. Navy and the Show Me Energy Cooperative are participating in the program, which "can be an important step in the efforts to continue to displace petroleum by using biomass resources," said NREL Manager for Bioprocess Integration R&D Dan Schell. "We’re converting biomass into sugars for subsequent conversion to butanol and then to JP5 jet fuel."
