A study in JAMA Internal Medicine revealed a connection between hypoglycemia and dementia among older diabetes patients. Patients who had experienced hypoglycemia had twice the risk of developing dementia, and patients who developed dementia during the 12-year study had triple the risk of a hypoglycemic event. "Hypoglycemia may impair cognitive health, and reduced cognitive function may increase the risk for a hypoglycemic event that could further compromise cognition, resulting in a detrimental cycle," researchers wrote.
