Gleaning lessons from China's homegrown exascale effort

China is becoming increasingly self-reliant as it moves full speed ahead with an aggressive high-performance computing program, according to experts, who say Chinese engineers are essentially developing an entire tech industry from scratch to fuel progress. Peter Beckman, head of the Energy Department's exascale initiative, says that while national pride may be at stake, the Chinese effort -- which involves homegrown components and software -- is not necessarily a threat and could help motivate the U.S. to accelerate its exascale program.
