The planet's carbon emissions rose 1.4% in 2012, to a record 31.6 billion metric tons. That's a relatively small rise, helped by one of China's lowest annual emissions increases in a decade. "[W]e still have a lot of work ahead to turn the annual carbon emissions growth into an annual decline in order to limit the climate damage to adaptable levels," writes Dana Nuccitelli.
