Hiring too many staffers too quickly can burden an enterprise that was once lean and nimble, as small-business owner Scott Lerner learned the hard way. Solixir, Lerner's energy-drink company, expanded from three to nine people after receiving an infusion of cash from an investor. "We'd gone from being entrepreneurial and snappy to fat and happy," he said.
