Report: NYC restaurants face more non-food fines

Most of the fines issued to New York City restaurants by the Health Department in the past two years were for violations that aren't related to food quality, covering everything from poorly maintained walls and ceilings to scratches on cutting boards, according to new data. The New York City Hospitality Alliance said many of the violations are there to generate money for the city, and the group is pushing the City Council to pass legislation to reduce fines on less-serious violations and emphasize food safety and education.
