Cosmetic preservatives still under scrutiny

Some companies are stopping the use of synthetic preservatives in favor of plant extracts and protein derivatives. However, a recent recall involving microbial contamination has placed scrutiny on those ingredients as well. "We're highly subjected to social media. ... Information gets out without scientific backing, and people assume certain chemicals are bad," said Michael Mack of Thor Specialties, a maker of synthetic and plant-based preservatives.
