Pharmacy expert supports patient-led pain management in ED

University of Arizona College of Pharmacy associate professor Asad Patanwala told the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists conference that asking emergency department patients whether they needed treatment for pain was better than using a numeric pain scale when determining when to medicate. He said pain management in the ED should be based on the time needed to achieve pain relief, the time needed to reach peak effect and how long the effect lasts.
