N.Y. Senate Grants Mayor Control Of Schools

The state Senate yesterday passed a law that would abolish local school boards in New York City by June 30, 2003, and give the mayor control of the school district, a report says. The law is pending the approval of the Justice Department -- approval many Republicans reportedly don't expect to gain.
