Congress vows regional airline bill

Saying that current regulations set a "low bar" for safety at regional airlines, lawmakers promised tighter controls during Thursday's House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's aviation subcommittee hearing, which sought to further investigate safety issues highlighted by the February crash of a Colgan Air commuter plane. Subcommittee Chairman Jerry Costello, D-Ill., said he would introduce a bill to force the FAA to take action, a position supported by the committee's ranking Republican, John Mica of Florida. FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt testified that safety practices will be the focus of a meeting scheduled for next Monday, to include industry leaders and government officials.
