Upworthy is the fastest-growing media website of all time with 8.7 million unique visitors per month in its first six months, according to Fast Company. Created by MoveOn.org founder Eli Pariser, the site uses emotional responses to promote content focused on social issues such as global poverty and marriage equality. The site favors an interactive approach to advertising and uses sponsored sign-up pages instead of banner ads. "We focus on engagement and work with groups that want to get folks engaged in their campaigns," Pariser said.
