Fingernail stem cells are capable of regrowing fingertips

Scientists at New York University have found that stem cells associated with fingernails can be activated to permit the regeneration of severed fingertips. In experiments with mice, the presence of a special category of proteins called "Wnts" appears to stimulate the surrounding stem cells and nerve cells to produce bone and connective tissue, regrowing the fingertip.
